Manufactured in 1941 as part of the first production block without serial number prefix. In addition to sales to the Netherlands Purchasing Commission for service in the Dutch East Indies, the United States Marine Corps acquired 750 rifles during World War II. This example is fitted with a 23" parkerized barrel marked "64A", protected blade front sight, and adjustable peep sight graduated to 1000 meters. Barrel bushing marked ".30-06" and "41" with a 7-row perforated heat shield. Bolt is from the same production block, although does not match the rifle serial number, a common occurrence as these rifles are believed to have been assembled at the factory without care to match internal numbers. Receiver stamped on top with maker, model, and patent information, and with "CRANSTON / ARMS" logo at the rear. Iconic rotary magazine with a small hole drilled in the left side which held a magazine limiting screw. An additional magazine body still in the grease is included. Standard 2-piece walnut stocks with a checkered steel butt plate. Buttstock has some mostly illegible trench art lettering which appears to be done with a bullet or similar pointed instrument. Also accompanied by an original spike bayonet and leather scabbard. CONDITION: Good. Significant portions of original finish are retained, thinning to an overall gray brown patina with a few minor areas of pitting. Stocks appear lightly cleaned with a repaired splits at the wrist and belly. Bright bore with defined rifling and some frosting. Mechanically fine. Rear sight is loose, an additional rear assembly is included.
