Lot consists of (A) For a nearly identical example, see pg. 171 Fig. 86 of "British Military Pistols and Associated Edged Weapons" by Brooker. Barrel with British proofs offset at the breech and marked with "(Crown) / 39" at tang. Lock has "TOWER" at rear in an arc, a stamped "(Crown) / GR" and vertical Broad arrow. Reinforced cock, waterproof bridled pan. Swivel ramrod. Stock has a proof at the wrist, unclear, but appears to be "(Crown) / GR / 180", IB behind sideplate, and other proofs beside trigger guard. Brass furniture comprises nosecap, S-shaped sideplate, buttcap, and trigger guard; trigger guard is marked "2 G L D /B / 25", probably a unit marking. CONDITION: Metal is essentially dove grey with areas of chocolate patina throughout, markings are clear. Stock has a heavy layer of varnish added and a 1 - 1/2" x 1 - 1/2" square replaced ahead of trigger guard with other handling marks and a few cracks. Mechanically fine, bore is very good. (B) Later sea service pistol with short barrel, swivel ramrod, proofs offset at the breech with 4 "kill notches" at top of stock opposite lock,lock marked "(Crown) / VR/ TOWER 1846" off offset broad arrow. Brass nosecap, reinforced mouth, trigger guard with "B / 49" and buttcap with fixed lanyard loop; rear of buttcap marked "33". Faint proofs on stock appear to be a broad arrow over "BC". CONDITION: Metal has been polished with areas of what appears to be chemical cleaning, legends somewhat softened. Stock has an extra layer of varnish, handling marks throughout, a 1" x 5/8" spliced repair, and an approximately 1/2" cylinder repair. Mechanically fine, bore is good with minimal oxidation. A neat pair of British pistols.
