A rare Confederate lasso bowie knife attributed to W.J. McElroy. The attribution to McElroy is made only from an account in the Macon Telegraph of a reporter's visit to the McElroy factory. In the newspaper report, the reporter mentions examining a lasso knife with a brass handle with a loop to attach a rope for throwing. For a similar example, see page 132 in "Confederate Bowie Knives". This example features a 14 - 3/4" spearpoint blade with a gray patina and spotting throughout its length. Edge wear throughout its length. Brass hilt with gilded finish and lasso hole at pommel. The grip exhibits scattered pockmarks with center indents that are typically encountered on these knives due to their hollow casting that would sink during the cooling process. 19 - 3/4" overall. CONDITION: Good.
