Nice example of an M1876 Buffalo Overcoat like those issued to Colonel Nelson A. Miles' troops in preparation for his campaign in 1876. The pattern of the coats followed a general style that were ankle length, double breasted with 5 sets of large, black, hard rubber buttons, each closed with a twisted cord loop. The coats were set with 2 deep slash pockets lined with dark blue wool. This example is in standard configuration and exhibits several repairs including patches, new lining, buttons, and cord loops, and is even stamped "Repaired / Aug 13, 1879 / SF Depot." in the right sleeve. The coat is also marked "16 / Western Costume Co / Hollywood, Calif / Size 38". The coat is heavy and the fur has retained its nice brown color without any significant remarkable discoloration or fading. The hair also has a nice texture and is not brittle. This is a very nice example of a seldom encountered piece of Indian Wars government issue equipment.
