George Ingram, famed inventor of the M10 submachine gun, began devising a multi-caliber weapons system based on the M1 carbine platform, building as few as 2 prototypes in the mid-70s dubbed the Police Rifle. These designs were eventually refined into the Western rifle designed for Greek military use, although few were produced. This lot includes 2 .223 barreled actions built by lngram, one built into a complete Model A Police rifle with his parts and a new made stock. Additional spare parts from lngram, as well as a partially completed stock, are included, which could possibly be used to build the second prototype. The completed carbine features a blued barrel with gold bead blade front sight and peep rear fixed to a custom lengthened receiver and bolt. The 2-piece oiled walnut stock is mounted with a single barrel band and flat steel butt plate replicates lngram's plans exactly. It will accept AR-15 magazines, but absent a provision to lock the magazine in place. Included with the prototype components are numerous technical drawings, including some done in pencil by Ingram, and other documentation, research, and correspondence. The components and documents were acquired from lngram's estate by Kirk Kellogg, who passed them along to Larry Ruth around 2007. The completed prototype is pictured on page 1477 of Ruth's "War Baby III" and described on the following few pages. CONDITION: Very good. The completed carbine rates very good. Nearly all of the polished blue finish is retained on the barrel. Other components show some handling and age as assembled. Stock is excellent. Fine bore. Rifle appears to cycle correctly but should not be fired under any circumstances. Other accessories rate fair to excellent. A very interesting and well-documented prototype lot.
