Circa 1890. A vintage, antique safari dangerous game rifle with 24” blacked dovetail barrels. Barrels built with extractors and wide fine filed flat top rib. Rib fit with one fixed sight regulated at 100 yards and two folding sights regulated at 100 and 150 yards. All are fire blued and with platinum line markers. Rib also with fire blued blade front sight and dolls head extension. Rib reads “WALTER LOCKE & CO CALCUTTA”. Bottom of barrels stamped with serial number, “A&T” and with proofs. Barrel flats marked “8 / 2” and with proofs. Heavy, solid action with trace colors is built with Jones underlever, hammers, third fastener, and double triggers. Metal with border scroll and locks read “WALTER LOCKE & CO.”. Trigger guard extends to a long bottom strap with border scroll and number “6347”. Handsome and robust reddish-brown stock with light feathering is built with a finely checkered pistol grip with case colored grip cap, loop for sling, golden shield, and finished with an orange Silvers pad. Splinter forend is fully checkered, escutcheon and iron metal with border scroll, pin with full coverage scroll and built with Anson push button release. Interior iron metal is case colored hardened with rifles serial number. Rifle lives in vintage oak and leather case. Case with “WALTER LOCKE & CO” paper trade label, cleaning and reloading tools. Accompanied by a copy of "The Double Rifle Primer" by Cal Pappas. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels excellent with light handling marks. Rifling is excellent. Action is excellent. Stock very good with light handling marks. Forend excellent. Case good with evidence of age, use and storage. PROVENANCE: Cal Pappas Collection
CORRECTION: The barrels have been reblued, the stocks revarnished, and the pad is of a newer vintage.
