This is one of those “what a shame” moments when one sees what was a matching 1941 dated “bnz” (Steyr) MP-40 that has been cut up into a parts kit. The good news is that the parts are now available to an appreciative collector’s market. All visible number match on this kit (4989h), including barrel, bolt, and lower assembly end cap and swing-out shoulder loop. The receiver tube was saw cut off just to the rear of the magazine housing, leaving everything to the front of the cut intact. Bolt and mainspring housing are present as well as an original leather sling still attached to the lower assembly. Shoulder rest is frozen in place and does not fold. In addition to the barrel on the kit pieces, there is a second (ERMA manufactured) MP-40 barrel (no resting bar), included in this lot with barrel nut, locking wedges, sling ring, and magazine housing. There is even one original “98e” “41” dated magazine included with this lot. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good to fine original finish with some brown and gray patina from storage, with some scale near the muzzles, particularly on one barrel. There are also scars on the retention nut from the tool used to remove it. The bores of both barrels are extremely fine, shiny and bright. The bolt and mainspring assembly are extremely fine to near excellent. The slotted screws on the lower assembly which hold the bakelite show some damage to the slots. This cataloger cannot recall seeing as nice a kit as this for public sale for many years. MP-40 parts are always in demand, especially barrels and bolts. JWK 2024-12-90.
