This rifle's buttstock is pictured on page 182 as number 341 in "Patchboxes & Barrel Marks" by Roy F. Chandler. Octagon barrel signed "J. Graeff" in script on top flat, barrel has swamped muzzle. Germanic lock with roller frizzen. Brass furniture including engraved four-piece patchbox and wide buttplate measuring 2". This rifle is a period restock using early parts of a Graeff rifle including the barrel, patchbox, sideplate and buttplate. The carving, forend lacking any molding, and the style of unprofessional style of lock inletting suggests the rifle is a restock using earlier components. The trigger guard is also later and the ramrod ferrules do not match, the rearmost ferrule round rather than faceted. The incised c-scroll carving on the plain maple or cherry stock is also not in the style of Graeff's carving. CONDITION: As found and untouched except for the replaced tang on the rearmost ramrod ferrule. Barrel retains a heavy dark patina, lock is in its original flintlock configuration and retains a dark patina. Brass has a dark mustard patina, Stock is dark with scattered marks from use and signs of age. PROVENANCE: Ex. Joe Kindig, Jr. Collection, Don Hamilton (Little Rock, Arkansas).
