Dovetail lump barrels with a diminutive brass bead front sight, with a concave game rib. Heavily softened legends in rib appear to read "J. MacNaughton Edinburgh" with a "2", indicating it was once part of a set. Small sprig of acanthus scroll at rear of rib, and breeches are engraved with stiff leaf engraving. Underside of tubes with matching serial numbers, "MacNaughton", and numerous proofs, most recent are British Nitro proofs for a 28 gauge with 70mm chambers (2 - 3/4"), at a nominal 14.7 IBD. Extractors. Slender friction fit splinter forearm with horn insert at forearm tip, engraved with a shell motif on exterior iron. Interior marked "NO 2" and "STEEL". Round body action with acanthus scroll engraving, and engraved "MACNAUGHTON EDINBURGH" in ribbons on recoil shield. Action flats with view proofs, British nitro proofs, serial number, "STEEL", and "No 2". Long top break lever with slot for viewing strikers through a composite window in tang. Safety is a swinging lever not dissimilar to a bolted safety on an African rifle. Double triggers protected by a blued trigger guard. Long tang with "No 2" and serial number. Walnut stock with point pattern checkering with mullered borders about the English straight grip stock and checkered butt. Leather wrapped case with wine colored lining with MacNaughton trade label in lid, pair snapcaps, and oil bottle. CONDITION: Barrels with a thick reblue over scattered pitting, mostly on underside, with legends almost totally gone. Some scattered handling marks and thinning, primarily to muzzle. Forearm wood has been sanded, revarnished, and recheckered, with some scattered handling marks. Action a smooth dove grey with some surface mossing and superficial scratches. Stocks have been revarnished and checkering recut, with some scattered handling marks. Mechanically fine, bores very good with some firing residue. Case very good with handling marks and scuffs, interior relined. A lovely light little 28.
CORRECTION: This gun was originally a 24 bore and was subsequently converted to a 28 gauge by sleeving the chambers. Measurements are as follows: Chokes (L) .015 (R) .018, Interior Bore Diameter is .598 in both barrels, and Barrel Wall Thickness is .026 in left barrel, and .025 in right. Drops are 1 - 5/8" at comb, and 2" at heel. Length of pull is 15". There is some minor orange peel towards muzzles.
