Manufactured in 1848, first year. All visible matching numbers except wedge. Early features include the oval cylinder cuts and square back brass trigger guard and back strap. Left side of frame is stamped US under Colt's Patent. Barrel has the Colt's New York address and a period installed dovetailed leaf rear sight. The cylinder roll die Dragoon and Indian battle scene is only partially visible, as is the USMR legend. Grips are one piece walnut. The wedge is a gunsmith replacement that does not fit well. CONDITION: The case color frame has a mottled patterned-out look with no visible color. Brass has oxidized with flashes of silver plate. Grips are shy at both forward toes and a small crack on left side at frame. Cylinder and barrel are a homogenous soft patina. Action indexes correctly. Bore is well defined with just minor black powder abrasion. Clean early US Dragoon.
