Manufactured by Barnett in standard P1853 configuration and purchased by the State of Georgia for arming their troops during the US Civil War. Lock is marked "Barnett" in block letters / "London" in italicized letters. Left side of barrel near breech is marked with British proof and view markings. Buttplate is numbered in the uniquely Barnett fashion of stamped numbers below the lower screw across the buttplate: "3441". Comb of stock is marked with "CH / 1" within a circle viewer's mark. Right side of stock is marked with a comparatively large "G" measuring approximately 7/8 of an inch, which is known as the "Big G" marking which is one of the markings denoting purchase by the State of Georgia. Left flat of stock opposite lock is carved with what appear to be large letters, although indiscernible. Mounted with a period leather sling. CONDITION: Good, with iron assemblies turned a heavy brown patina and heavy freckling near breech. Brass components are a pleasing mellow patina. This rifled musket benefitted from a significant cleaning, most notable throughout stock and front barrel band. "CH / 1" marking has been carefully refreshed, likely a result of it being softened during the cleaning. Mechanically fine with 2 crisp stops at half and full cock. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Confederate purchased Enfield pattern rifle muskets are sought after by collectors, with this particular one being even more desirable with state purchase provenance.
