The Winchester letter states this gun was received on August 6th, 1909, and shipped the same day with a 22" round barrel, nickel steel, Extra Light, and takedown. Letter also states this rifle was furnished with the rifle butt plate which is a very rare feature on any light weight. The first extra lightweight was shipped in 1896, so this is a fairly early example of a model that became quite popular later. Finish is blue with a case color lever and hammer, walnut stocks, a Lyman ivory bead front sight, and flat top rear sight. CONDITION: Excellent. The sides of the receiver retain the majority of high polish blue finish thinned at base from carry. The hammer and lever retains some strong case color. Tapered barrel, half magazine and nose cap retain at least 99% blue. Walnut stocks are proud to metal with nominal light impressions. Bore is bright. Teddy Roosevelt took an 1886 in 45-70 to Africa in 1909 which became one of his favorite weapons. A great condition gun in an iconic caliber.
