Attributed to Samuel Driesbach, Upper Susquehanna School, Pennsylvania. Heavy deeply rifled octagon barrel with partially visible signature on top flat, at breech "S * Dr -------". Lock features a roller frizzen and is stamped "LANE & READ / BOSTON" in the center. Brass furniture includes large patchbox with 7 piercings and an engraved lid. Vacant silver oval wrist escutcheon, cheekpiece inlay, and engraved silver star above cheekpiece surrounded by two silver hearts. Figured tiger maple stock with incised c-scrolls with feathering behind cheekpiece. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina with wear to signature, which has at some time been cleaned and now retains a light grey patina. Touch-hole appears to be period rebushing. Lock retains a brown patina and is in its original flintlock configuration. Brass retains a mustard patina, small section of front of sideplate has been replaced. Stock shows scattered signs of age and wear, one old piece of wood replaced above front of lock. Ramrod appears to be original.
