Thomas Jackson Mortimer is recorded in London circa 1781 till 1838, and received an appointment as gunmaker to the King and a Royal Warrant circa 1822. This pair is in identical configuration and clearly made as a pair with browned octagonal faux Damascus twist barrels with diminutive bead front sights, engraved "T J Mortimer. Maker to his Majesty. London" in gothic script with light scrollwork. Hooked patent breeches with case colored breeches, engraved with light florals and beadwork. Notch rear sights on tangs engraved with acanthus scroll. Captive ramrods retained by a single ferrule on half-rib before feeding into a reinforced silver mouth. Barrels retained by keys through silver escutcheons. Flat locks with sprigs of floral scroll, engraved "TJ Mortimer" in gothic script and cursive "St. James' St", with English stalking safety, dolphin form cock with floral scroll en suite, and a single sidenail feeding through a brass escutcheon. Walnut stocks with silver forearm cap, trigger guard with pineapple finial, and bag grips with English flat top checkering and mullered borders. Small silver plaques at wrist. Housed in a wood case lined in royal purple, with Mortimer trade label in lid, and housing accessories including a japanned percussion cap tin by Blissett, pewter oil bottle, combination nipple wrench and pricker, ramrod with removeable head to reveal a jag, combination powder flask and ball holder, with fire blue spring and red Moroccan leather wrapping, combination bullet mold and sprue cutter marked "No 16" and "W & D", jag, four lead balls, and cloth. CONDITION: Barrels with the vast majority of their browning, with some scattered fine oxidation through to silvering. Some silvering at sharp edges at muzzle. Locks with somewhat less than half of their case colors, with better retention in protected areas. Stocks very good with some scattered handling marks, and some infill. Case very good with some handling marks and some impressions, one partition loose and some crushing to others, but solid and whole.
