The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. took over production of Volcanic arms from Smith & Wesson in 1855 and after assembling stocks of Smith & Wesson made parts began producing brass frame Volcanics around the end of the year. Over the next 13 months before reorganization as New Haven Arms, approximately 3,000 large frame pistols were produced. This fine example is fitted with a polish blued 8" holster model barrel with 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854" address. German silver cone front sight and dovetailed v-notch rear. Plain, unplated brass frame. Standard smooth oiled walnut grips, each stamped on the inside with the matching serial number. Left grip is also stamped "1355" on the outside. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its original blue with some mild thinning, edgewear and scattered marks. Receiver appears to have been cleaned some time ago, now displaying a pleasant mellow patina. Follower retains strong nitre blue around the edges, the center cleaned. Lever displays original blue on the sides mixing with gunmetal patina. Hammer colors have largely faded to patina as well. Grips have expected impressions and nicks with some added finish. Right side also has several small unfilled holes, likely where a plaque of some sort was mounted. Bore is especially fine and bright, showing little if any use. Fine mechanics. A nice example.
