This rifle was a lethal sniper rifle in the hands of Confederates during the Civil War and was immensely popular at British match shoots. Rifle features an adjustable globe front sight, adjustable notch-and-ladder rear sight stamped "MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO" on the right side of the base. Sports an adjustable long range tang sight at wrist. There is a circular style legend near breech with a crown that reads "WHITWORTH MANCHESTER". Other features include a heavy round barrel, a case color lock that is stamped with a crown and "MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO". There is a sliding safety forward of the hammer. The walnut half stock features a nicely hand checkered pistol grip, forearm with large diamond around the escutcheon and a black horn forearm tip. The metal butt plate is finely checkered. CONDITION: Excellent. The barrel is a smooth blue with some patina bleeding through and some added finish. The case color on tang are bright but the hammer and lock have faded. The stock is superb with minor impressions. The bore is bright with pronounced Whitworth rifling. A beautiful example of some of the finest British workmanship of that era.
