These rifles were a lethal sniper rifle in the hands of Confederates during the Civil War and were immensely popular at British match shoots. Rifle features an adjustable globe front sight, adjustable notch-and-ladder rear sight stamped "MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO" on the right side of the base, but the ladder has been removed. Sports an adjustable long range tang sight at wrist. There is a legend near breech that reads "WHITWORTH PATENT". Other features include a heavy round barrel and a case color lock that is stamped with crown and "MANCHESTER ORDNANCE & RIFLE CO". There is a sliding safety forward of the hammer. The walnut half stock features a nicely hand checkered pistol grip and forearm with large diamond around the escutcheon with a black horn forearm tip. The metal butt plate is smooth. CONDITION: Excellent. The barrel is a smooth blue with some patina bleeding through and thinning. The case color on tang, lock and hammer are 90% intact and strong. The stock is superb with minor impressions. The bore is bright with pronounced Whitworth rifling. A beautiful example of some of the finest British workmanship of that era in superb condition.
