The barrel is stamped "Sharps Rifle Manufa. Co. Hartford Conn". Made by Robbins and Lawrence for Sharps from 1854 until October of 1856 when Sharps assumed production. According to records, only 250 carbines bear the military acceptance marks. This example bears a very visible cartouche on left side but not totally legible. There is a "K" subinspector stamp on barrel. The Army issued these to the 1st and 2nd Dragoon regiments on the western frontier. Given the rough environment, very few have survived. This carbine features the distinctive 9" long bar with saddle ring. Barrel mounted with long slide rear sight and post front. The barrel band, buttplate, and patchbox are brass. The right side plate has the Sharps 1852 legend. The tang has Sharps patent legend. Stocks are walnut. CONDITION: Very good. This is one of the best surviving examples this writer is aware of. All metal is a smooth gun metal grey. All legends are crisp. The patch box screws sill show some fire blue. Bright fire blue on hammer spring screw. The brass is nicely toned. The wood is exceptional with just some minor impressions. The rifling is sharp and bright with some minor frosting.
