Made by Gibbs at his Bristol shop. This is a No. 1 chambered for the .461 Gibbs big game cartridge also known as the Gibbs 2 11/32" using a 540 grain bullet with 90 grains of black powder, a bottle neck centerfire. The Gibbs Farguharson Metford was introduced in 1879. Barrel is stamped Metford 1797 George Gibbs 39 Corn Street Bristol chambered for the Gibb's No. 1 case. This rare single shot is built in a military configuration with a full length checkered walnut forearm, matching checkered pistol grip walnut stock with roll over cheek piece, a checkered steel butt plate with trap door, a 33" round barrel , two barrel bands with bayonet lug on forward band, a metal cleaning rod, a folding military style rear sight, post front sight, hammerless, right side safety with a case color frame, lever and grip cap along with sling eyes. Right side of frame is stamped "BOLTED" in gold with gold serial number on bridge. The right side of rear band has an etched Sanskrit. The original canvas and leather case has the Gibbs trade label. Left side of frame is stamped George Gibbs Bristol. The left barrel breech has numerous British proof marks. CONDITION: Magnificent with nearly all the bright blue, fire blue, bright case colors, fantastic stock with sharp checkering and minor impressions. A scuff on rear band and minor handling only. Bright 7-groove Metford rifling . It would be nearly impossible to find another Gibbs rifle of this style and in this condition. The case comes with an old glass oil bottle in wood case, wooden rod, can of grease and cleaning pull. The case has some stains, faded red interior, a broken handle and one broken end apron.
