This striking rifle was manufactured in 1908 per Madis. It features No. 2 style engraving, a $175 option in the 1897 Winchester Highly Finished Arms catalog, well exceeding the meager $18 price of a standard 1894 rifle at the time. The engraving on this rifle was executed by master engraved Neil Hermson and is signed behind the trigger, "N Hermson". The left side of the receiver has a central vignette depicting a buck and doe, both inlaid in gold, in a wooded landscape with gold borders and a background embellished with tight scroll and geometrics. The right vignette features a gold inlaid bull moose with gold borders and further scrollwork. The engraving extends to the top and bottom of the receiver with further gold and platinum linework. Lever and hammer are case hardened with handsome gold embellishments. It is furnished with a blued nickel steel octagon barrel, nickel steel barrels provided on .38-55 guns as a special order option only. Gold and silver inlaid bands are present at muzzle and breech along with engraved flourishes. Type 3 2-line barrel address roll marked on the top flat. Fitted with a Sheard gold bead front sight and platinum inlaid Marbles full buckhorn rear. "F" pattern checkered walnut forend mounted with an engraved and gold inlaid nose cap. Matching "F" pattern varnished walnut stock displaying fine feathercrotch grain with hard rubber capped pistol grip and checkered WRACO hard rubber shotgun butt plate. Inside of tang stamped with a "7400 XXX" assembly number and wood grade, a matching "7400" present in the stock channel. CONDITION: Excellent as professionally restored and upgraded. Virtually all of the expertly reapplied blue is retained throughout with a few handling marks and light freckles. Nearly all of the case colors are displayed on hammer and lever. Engraving is crisp. Stocks fit well and remain proud to metal with a few light scattered marks. Very fine bright bore. Crisp mechanics. An extremely handsome Winchester '94.
