One of the very last guns produced by Winchester in the nineteenth century, the serial number was applied to this rifle on December 30, 1899. It shipped from the Winchester warehouse February 14, 1901. Rifle sports a blued half octagon barrel with half length magazine tube, Beech front sight, and desirable 3-position platinum lined express rear sight. Takedown frame finished in reapplied polished blue. Factory close coupled set triggers. Deluxe checkered walnut forend and pistol grip stock of nice figure. Stock fitted with a hard rubber WRACO grip cap and steel shotgun butt plate. Lower tang is stamped with "3903 XXXS" assembly number, wood grade, and shotgun butt notation. Stock and butt plate are numbered "9948". Included Cody factory research confirms special order features, sights unlisted. CONDITION: Fine as restored. Barrel displays the vast majority of its blued finish with some spots of wear, especially along the high edges and a few cleaned oxidation spots. Receiver retains nearly all of its lustrous reapplied blue. A pair of expertly filled in holes are present on the left side but are largely disguised. Lever displays strong and bright case colors with some fading to patina, hammer colors somewhat muted. Loading gate exhibits bright nitre blue with minimal wear. Forend shows sharp checkering with a some scattered impressions, a small gap also present at the rear. Stock appears lightly cleaned with a 5/8" by 1 - 1/2" repair along the toeline. Scattered impressions and a solvent streak also present. Very good, crisp bore. Fine mechanics.
