This is a type 2 open top with scoop flutes, nickel finish, case colored trigger guard and hammer, lanyard ring, and genuine pearl grips that have carved Mexican eagle with snake on right panel. Assembly number 14727 on butt. Matching serial numbers found on grip frame under grips on left side, back of cylinder, and back of barrel. The frame is not marked with any caliber, which indicates it is probably chambered for the .44 M&H cartridge. Neither the .44-40 nor the .44 Smith & Wesson will chamber in this revolver. The top of barrel has the one line Merwin legend. The left side of barrel has the Hopkins and Allen legend. CONDITION: Excellent. The barrel retains at least 95% factory nickel finish with some wear at muzzle and some minor handling marks. Legends are legible. The cylinder shows a drag line, grey patina at high forward edge, and a few small areas of patina. The left side of frame is about 95% with few freckles along lower edge. Right side has a 1" area of grey patina with balance of nickel present. The back strap shows some bubbling. Front strap is fine but missing the lower screw. Case color has darkened. Grips are fine with some chipping but no breaks. Action is smooth and tight. Bore is well defined with minor abrasion. This is a sharp early Merwin.
