This very unusual and interesting Volcanic carbine features the name "Wm. Page" stamped in place of the barrel address on the top flat, as well in place of a serial number on the tang, lever, and butt plate. It is speculated that this William Page is the American painter (January 3, 1811 – October 1, 1885) who worked out of New York City after returning from Italy around 1860. Carbine is fitted with a polished blue pistol carbine barrel with small blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear. These barrels were produced in limited numbers by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. circa 1857, some remaining on hand when production resumed under New Haven Arms later that year. Brass receiver is engraved in the New Haven style with well executed foliate scroll and floral motifs, an open presentation banner on the left side plate. Engraving continues onto the brass butt plate. Oiled walnut stock is contemporary. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrel assembly retains the vast majority of its factory blue, some areas starting to drift to plum patina, especially the magazine block. Receiver exhibits an untouched dark, mellow bronze patina. Engraving and markings remain crisp. Stock is very fine with a few handling marks. Very fine, bright bore showing little if any use. Fine mechanics. A very interesting Volcanic deserving of further research.
