Only 1,731 Henry rifles were officially purchased by the federal government for martial use, many going to the 1st DC Cavalry to defend Washington DC in 1864. These arms are traditionally found in the 3000-4000 serial number range. This circa 1863 Henry is numbered "2971", slightly below the known range. The frame and barrel are both marked with the Benjamin Tyler Henry "H" inspection marks, the barrel also stamped with "C.G.C." for martial inspector Charles G. Chapman as would be correct for Type I martial Henry rifles, although markings appear added sometime after this example left the factory. Barrel is otherwise standard with blued finish and small style 2-line address. Fitted with tapered German silver blade front sight and 900 yard ladder rear sight, the rear sight currently set in the receiver dovetail. Full length magazine tube with large style brass follower and forward sling bar with ring. Matching "150" assembly numbers observed on the loading gate and barrel underneath. Early contour brass frame. Walnut stock with slightly obtuse comb angle, the matching serial number stamped in the channel. No visible military inspection cartouche. Stock is mounted with a sling swivel and matching numbered early rounded heel brass tool trap butt plate. Butt plate marked with an added "H" inspection stamp. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel displays a pleasant plum patina mixing in a few areas with some added finish. Frame exhibits a very attractive mottled mellow mustard patina. Receiver shows various older nicks and dings, especially concentrated around the hammer and tops of the side plates. Stock has been lightly cleaned long ago with some scattered nicks and impressions remaining. Worn bore. Fine mechanics.
