The New Haven Arms Co. was organized by Oliver Winchester in 1857 to continue production of Volcanic style repeating arms after the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. was dissolved. Prior to the introduction of the iconic Henry rifle in 1860, around 1,000 Volcanic carbines were produced by New Haven, available with 16", 21" and 25" barrels, the 25" barrels are by far the rarest with less than 20 known today. Not only are these carbines extremely scarce, but they also display exceedingly well with their Henry rifle successor, the extra barrel length making them more comparable in size than the more common 16" carbines. This example is fitted with a Type III ribless octagon barrel with 1-line "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854" address. Sights include a German silver half moon blade and and elevation adjustable v-notch rear. Full length 30-round magazine with replacement iron follower tab. Brass receiver is factory engraved with characteristic open foliate scroll and appears to have been originally silver plated. Walnut buttstock is numbered under the butt plate, the engraved brass butt plate also stamped with matching serial number. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel displays an honest plum patina with some older evidence of oxidation. Address remains strong and legible. Receiver exhibits a rich golden mellow mustard patina. Engraving is somewhat worn but remains very attractive. Stock has been sanded and reoiled, fitting somewhat shy at the tang. Strong, well defined bore with black powder abrasion. Mechanics are sticky. A very scarce and highly desirable Volcanic carbine.
