Manufactured in 1862 as the Civil War raged, many Henry rifles were carried into battle as private purchase arms in addition to limited government contracts. This example is fitted with an octagon barrel shortened to 22 - 3/4" from the factory 24". It is documented that New Haven Arms experimented with 18" and 21" Henry carbines for military use with at least one trialed circa 1864. Top flat is stamped with correct early small style 2-line address. Modified early style German silver half moon front sight and early 1000 yard graduated rear ladder. Full length magazine tube with with large brass follower, likely a replacement. No assembly numbers present on loading gate or barrel underneath, the loading gate assembly a replacement. Early brass frame with rear sight dovetail. Straight grain walnut stock of correct early perch belly form with abrupt comb angle. Matching serial number stamped in the channel. Right side of the stock features period inlaid silver heart and rhombus decorations, as well as a brass pinwheel. Rounded heel brass butt plate with matching number on the underside. Stock and butt plate screws also stamped with matching numbers. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel has a mottled dove gray patina, address strong and legible. Receiver displays a golden patina with some scattered marks. Stock has been lightly cleaned and shows scattered impressions and nicks. A split present at the wrist. Well defined bore with some black powder abrasion. Crisp mechanics.
