Production of Volcanic pistols continued from Smith & Wesson to the newly incorporated Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in 1855. This rather early production example is numbered "303", some 3,000 large frame pistols were produced in total by Volcanic Repeating Arms during their 13 month production run. It is marked on the top flat with 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN FEB. 14, 1854" address. The 8" "holster" size barrel is of standard octagon form, finished in lustrous polished blue. A small blade front sight is fitted to the muzzle collar, and a v-notch rear sight dovetailed into the receiver. Brass receiver is attractively silver plated. Finger loop lever and hammer are case hardened. Smooth 2-piece walnut grips, the left stamped on the inside with the full serial number. Matching numbers also observed on the lever, bolt, toggles, inside of side each side plate, as well as the frame. CONDITION: Excellent. The original blue remains strong and bright on the barrel assembly with some light thinning on the loading gate, as well as faint high edge silvering and scattered handling marks. Blue is likewise fine on the lifter. Receiver retains virtually all of its silver plating, having taken on a very pleasant mellow patina with a few darker patina spots. Lever displays bright case colors on the sides, the working surfaces drifting to a patterned gray patina. Hammer likewise retains most of its strong case colors. Grips have some very light impressions and appear lightly cleaned with an added coat of finish. Strong, well defined bore showing some expected mild black powder abrasion. Crisp mechanics. An outstanding example that would be difficult to improve upon, a worthy addition for the advanced Winchester collection.
