After the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. was established in 1855, production transferred from Smith & Wesson and continued under the name through 1857. Over 13 months approximately 3,000 Navy size pistols were produced, this example produced at the middle of the production run. This holster size Navy is fitted with a blued octagon barrel. Top flat marked with 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854." address. Small blade front sight and drift adjustable dovetailed v-notch rear sight. Magazine follower tab appears to be a replacement, having a slightly thicker profile. Iconic brass frame stamped 4 times on the right side plate with small masonic square and compass touchmarks. Smooth oil finished walnut grips appear to be replacements, each marked on the inside with matching serial numbers. Matching numbers also observed on the frame, lever, inside of side plates, and toggle. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel blue has largely faded to a mellow brown gray patina. Address remains strong and legible. Frame exhibits a rich, darkened mustard patina. Hammer and lever case colors have faded to gray patina with some light patterning. Grips fit somewhat unevenly but are otherwise excellent with a few very light marks. Well defined bore with some areas of abrasion. Fine mechanics.
