Produced circa 1856 after production was taken over from Smith & Wesson by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in 1855. Prior to being reorganized as the New Haven Arms Co. under Oliver Winchester in 1857, approximately 3,000 navy size pistols were produced. This belt size navy pistol is fitted with a polish blued 6" octagon barrel. Top flat stamped with a 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854" address, "THE VOLCANIC" stamped very lightly and only partially legible. Pistol is fitted with a brass bead front sight and drift adjustable v-notch rear. Unplated brass frame construction. Grips are smooth walnut, each with matching numbers stamped inside. Matching numbers also observed on the frame, lever, inside each side plate, on the bolt, carrier, and toggle links. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel assembly retains the majority of its fading factory blue, some spots thinning to an even gray patina. Frame displays a pleasant mellow patina with some freckling present on the back strap and front sight side. Hammer and lever retain traces of finish in protected areas, the balance drifting to patina. Grips show light impressions throughout and wear long the edges of the base. Bore is well defined with some mild black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics.
