The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. produced approximately 3,000 navy size Volcanic pistols from the end of 1855 to 1857 when production was reorganized under Oliver Winchester's the New Haven Arms Company. Housed in a purple crushed velvet relined partitioned period presentation case, this attractive assembled pair is comprised of 6" belt size pistols. Pistol (A) is marked on top flat of its replacement barrel with a rerolled 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854" address. Tall brass bead front sight and drift adjustable notch rear. Frame is silver plated and engraved in open flowing folate scroll, leaf motifs, and cross hatch patterning as usually encountered on New Haven arms production pistols. Pistol is fitted with upgraded 2-piece smooth ivory stocks. CONDITION: Fine as restored. Barrel retains significant portions of reapplied blue, drifting to a plum patina. Receiver displays virtually all of its attractive reapplied plating. Stocks exhibit a rich creamy patina with a few darkened spots. Well defined bore with some light frosting. Action is sticky. Pistol (B) also bears the 3-line "THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854" address. Cone front sight and drift adjustable v-notch rear. The silver plated frame is engraved with large flowing foliate scroll with leaf motifs. Somewhat more elaborate than usual Volcanic engraving, a very similar pattern is exhibited on Oliver Winchester's personal pair of Volcanic pistols. Stocks are matching upgraded smooth ivory. CONDITION: Fine as restored. The barrel assembly retains the majority of its fading reapplied blue. The frame retains nearly all of its bright, reapplied plating with a few minor spots of loss. Grips are very fine with a pleasant cream patina. Bore is well defined with some black powder abrasion. Fine mechanics. Case is good with a mild lid warp, as well as dings and nicks throughout. An attractive pair of scarce Volcanic pistols that display very well.
