Per an included copy of a 2023 dated Cody factory letter, the serial number was applied to this Model 1897 on February 23, 1918. This example number E676507 falls well within World War I trench gun contract production, the generally accepted production block running from E613000 to E705000. Finished in standard Winchester blue, this shotgun is fitted with a correct 20" cylinder choked barrel. The 6 row perforated heat shield bears early "PAT. APPL. FOR" marking above the bayonet lug. Receiver is marked on the right side ahead of the ejection port with a "US" and flaming bomb, the "US" characteristically misaligned. Grooved oiled walnut slide. Plain walnut pistol grip stock with rear sling swivel and checkered hard rubber WRACO butt plate. A "US" proofed 1917 Remington bayonet with olive leather scabbard is included. CONDITION: Very good. The vast majority of the factory applied blued finishes are retained with some areas of light wear and browning, especially on the top of the receiver which has largely drifted to patina. Stocks have some expected scattered impressions and a hairline slit at the wrist. A small chip present at the toe of the butt plate. Bright and shiny bore with evidence of use. Fine mechanics. A nice, honest example of perhaps the most iconic World War I American small arm.
