This cannon was the breech-loaded ordnance which succeeded the earlier Dahlgren boat howitzers and is clearly marked at top center between the trunnions “ 3” / RIFLE / 500LBS / NO.8 / (anchor proof)". The top of the breech is marked “ORD. DEP. U.S. N.Y. WASHINGTON”. The right trunnion is marked “463 LBS / 1881” and the left trunnion is marked “P / HLH”. This gun has a contemporary manufactured steel and brass breech block fitted to it, with breech ring included albeit not on the tube. Retaining bolts and fasteners for the breech ring are not present. Original carriage is of steel and brass construction with the brass elevation screw dated 1878 and on marked “U.S.N.Y.”. Carriage wheels are wood with steel tires and brass hubs. Right hub is “U.S.N.Y.” marked. Measures: Muzzle to trail 112". Outer hub to Outer hub 54". Height 43". Weight of tube and carriage approximately 1000 lbs. PROVENANCE: Listed as being the USS Brooklyn (serial #8); Springfield Arsenal, LLC Artillery Collection. CONDITION: Attractive black painted finish on tube withgrey green paint on steel carriage parts and wood of the wheels. Some of the brass furnishings are brightly polished while others have darker patina. Trunnions have some light pitting, but are very fine. Bore is extremely fine with some light pitting. Typical polishing of the brass as was the norm for the 19th and early 20th century navy has lightened the markings on the brass, but these markings remain discernible. This is a very rare cannon to find today and a desirable piece of antique U.S. Navy ordnance with known provenance of which U.S. Navy ship it was on. JWK 2025-05-080.
