This is a matching 1942 dated “bnz” (Steyr) MP-40 that has been cut up into a parts kit. Visible numbers are matching on this kit, 8865, including barrel, bolt, and lower assembly end cap and swing-out shoulder loop. The receiver tube was saw cut off through the ejection port, leaving everything to the front of the cut intact. Bolt and mainspring housing are present as well as an original leather sling still attached to the lower assembly. The barrel on this kit has been brass-brazed closed with some slight damage to the muzzle. There is one original “98e” “41” dated magazine included with this lot. PROVENANCE: Photocopy of hand-written packing list from duffle bag, dated July 6, 1945 with obliterated last name of a WWII Veteran from Massachusetts. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good to fine original finish with some brown and gray patina from storage. The bore is unobserved due to the welding at the muzzle. The bolt and mainspring assembly are extremely fine. Cosmetically, a very nice kit. Whether the plugged-at-the-muzzle barrel can be made functional without counter-boring the muzzle is an open question which can only be answered when the work is proceeding. JWK 2025-09-167.
