This is a Marlin manufactured "potato digger" which is marked on top of receiver as well as on matching barrel “MARLIN ARMS CORPORATION NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT CAL-30 U.S.A.”. Parts appear to be matching throughout. Marlin Rockwell took over the manufacturing rights to the Colt Model 1914 "digger" from Colt in 1916, and began producing this improved design in 1917, and this gun is dated 1917. The sliding door on the right side which gives easier access to the action is an immediate telltale sign of a Marlin digger. Electronic NFA registry indicates “COLT” as the manufacturer. This can be requested correction through the BATF. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is extremely fine to near excellent original blued finish with some areas, particular at the contact points, thinning to a gray patina, with some bits of brown patina on the exposed metal surfaces. Wooden grip panels have some very light dings and remain attractive. Dust in the cooling pins. Bore is very good with well-defined rifling but getting dark. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are extremely fine and action is very smooth on this digger with a clean gas port. The digger is a lot of fun to shoot and can utilize Browning cloth belts in a pinch. This is a fine handsome specimen and would be a great addition to the collection of a World War I enthusiast as well as fun gun to take to the range. See digger shooting platforms being offered as separate lots in this same auction. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2029-09-225.
