Fine example of a Haenel manufactured MP44 manufactured in 1944 with clear eagle over “37 on the bottom of the receiver forward of the magazine housing. Also “cos” which indicates Mertzwerke, a metal pressing sub-contractor, supplied parts for this gun. Op rod is non-matching as well as the bolt, which was manufactured by Mauser, and has had its electro-pencil serial number carefully obliterated. Lower assembly and buttstock DO match the receiver. Wood buttstock is of the later lower profile (4.75" high). One original magazine is included with this gun. The MP44 was an developed to be an "all-purpose" weapon chambered for an intermediate cartridge falling between the full-power 8 mm rifle cartridge, and the 9mm pistol cartridge. Capable of both semi-automatic and fully-automatic fire at will it was the first modern "assault rifle" and could fill the role of a deliberate aimed fire weapon, as well as that of a suppressing fire weapon which was much needed by the Germans on the Eastern front against the Russians. Much has been written about the development of this model, but the concept was to manufacture this rifle utilizing metal stampings to the maximum extent to save production time. Electronic NFA registry indicates “GERMANY” in the manufacturer’s block. CONDITION: Overall Appearance and finish is fine and better original finish thinning in places to a gray patina. Bore is extremely fine, shiny with some firing residue, as well as firing residue on the operating rod. The bolt has undergone refinish to a lustrous blue finish, but there is no evidence it needed it. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. Wood is in extremely fine condition with light handling marks. This is a very fine specimen of the MP-44, and this cataloger can attest to the fact that these are very enjoyable guns to shoot. This is a fine collector’s item as well as an enjoyable recreational machine gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2025-09-241.
