There are only very few genuine original Russian sideplate tractor cap Maxim guns in the registry. This cataloger recalls Dolf Goldsmith remarking when the one he once owned was being auctioned off from the Evergreen collection that he was only aware of five original specimens registered for private ownership in the United States. That was over 10 years ago. This cataloger has not seen as many as five registered true C&R eligible original tractor cap guns, but this IS one of them, consigned by a very advanced and discerning collector who is thinning out his collection. This gun has many matching parts including receiver, top cover (1944 dated), feed block, backplate, crosshead, recoil plates, trunnion, and muzzle. The lock also matches in number to the receiver which the serial number’s first two characters are Cyrillic. The fusee cover has been repainted, as has the entire gun, and the serial number, if present, is not discernible. Check lever, rear sight, and top cover latch are non-matching. Charging handle and oil brush caps are un-numbered. It is noteworthy that this gun retains the original, “spring plates” at the trunnion in front of the top cover. All-steel hardware Sokolov mount is of a vintage consistent with this gun, and includes the armored shield and attachment hardware. Electronic NFA registry indicates “RUSSIAN FEDERATION” in the manufacturer’s block. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent, near 100% repainted finish on water jacket and receiver; refinished blue on feedblock and topcover, with thinning blue finish on the steel muzzle. There is a dent on the left side of the water jacket 6” to 8” from the nose cap, which is numbered 1403 with steam piston cap matching gun serial number. There are other very minor nicks and dings to the water jacket as well as some discernible scratches and light pitting under the painted surfaces. Fusee cover had moderate pitting at some point, but the repaint covers this quite nicely. Muzzle is in very clean condition. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Lock face is extremely fine. Wood handles on backplate near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. Mount and armor shield retains over 95% of their green painted finish, with blued inner cradle. Turn table base moves appropriately. Brass base unpainted and quite attractive. This is an exceedingly rare opportunity to acquire an original tractor cap Maxim with original Russian sideplate. The last one sold over 10 years ago. It has been a long wait for this opportunity. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2025-09-243.
