Circa 1912 per "British Gunmakers: Volume One - London" by Brown. Chopper lump barrels, finely fitted with dolls head feature a bead front sight vertically dovetailed into a raised island and retained by a screw. Island and ramp with anti-glare matting throughout and relieved on either side for a sight hood. Quarter rib at rear with matting throughout en suite and fit with a dovetailed V rear sight. Signed "E.J. Churchill. (Gunmakers) Ltd" and "8, Agar St Strand. London. W.C.2." over chambers. Hidden third bite. Breeches decorated with fine scroll border and 1 - 1/2" triangles of nicely cut scroll, and rib extension with acanthus scrollwork. Sling eye on island sweated to underside of rib. Flat bottom splinter forearm with turn-off release, nicely engraved with fine English scroll, which is repeated on exterior iron. Interior iron with matching serial number. Action flats with serial number and view proof. Boxlock action with essentially complete coverage of finely cut small size English scroll, signed "E.J. Churchill" in ribbons on both sides of action. Underside plate with "HERCULES / FINEST 470 QUALITY / MODEL", with .470 inlaid in gold. Double triggers protected by a flat bottom trigger guard with a long tang that runs all the way to grip cap. Non-automatic safety with "SAFE" in gold ahead of slide with long tang that runs over comb. Densely streaked walnut stock build with teardrops, two panels of point pattern checkering about the wrist with mullered borders, shadowline chekpiece, brass vanity plate at toe line with a post-factory "BA", sling eye, and orange rubber recoil pad with English style covered screws. In a brass tabbed leather wrapped case lined in forest green with an E.J. Churchill trade label in lid and containing accessories comprising a sight hood, Holland & Holland spanner wrench, bone striker pot with replacement front sight, pair snapcaps, sling, square oil bottle, two piece cleaning rod, and wallet with mop, jag, and brush. This exact gun is featured in the 11th Edition of the Cartridges of the World, page 401. CONDITION: Very good as conserved. Barrels with the vast majority of a top quality reblue, with some thinning over chambers and scattered throughout, and some pinprick oxidation. Boxlock with traces of case colors in most protected areas, such as at recoil shield, with balance a pleasing gunmetal grey with crisp engraving. Stocks very good with some handling marks and impressions throughout. Forearm has a chip at right fang and another small chip towards nose. Buttstock with scattered dings and impressions, but no cracks or chips. Stocks have had an extra layer of varnish professionally applied. Mechanically fine, bores are excellent with strong rifling. Case very good with typical scuffs and handling marks. Accessories very good. A very scarce double rifle from one of London's Best makers.
