NATIVE AMERICAN CIGAR STORE FIGURE ATTRIBUTED TO SAMUEL ROBB

C: 1880. Samuel A. Robb apprenticed to a shipbuilder for five years, then went to work for a wood-carver, making figures for tobacco shops. He spent the day working in the shop and attended classes at the National Academy of Design. Robb’s wood shop was the largest in nineteenth-century New York City, and he carved a wide variety of figures, from traditional cigar store Indians to circus wagons and ventriloquist dummies. This example of a young Native American brave stands 50" tall, 70" when displayed on the contemporary stand. This size figure would have had an advertising base at 24" giving the figure a full 6' in height and would benefit in presentation to have one replicated. CONDITION: Cloaked in the original polychrome paint showing no touch-ups or restoration. there are age cracks and stress cracks from age, all consistent with an original figure of this period. Additional the figure would be holding a bunch of tobacco in his left hand and most likely a spear in is right. All considered, this is a wonderful original example of Robb's 19th century work and in remarkable condition.
