VERY RARE CANON CITY PRISON "RED RYDER" SPURS

Exceedingly rare and historically important custom prison-made spurs for the creator of the Red Ryder comic strip, Fred Harman (February 9, 1902 – January 2, 1982). He was best known for his immensely popular Red Ryder comic strip, which he drew for 25 years and reached 40 million readers through more than 700 newspapers. The franchise that grew from the name is still making money to this day and most associated with the iconic Red Ryder BB gun, a rifle that has introduced millions to gun ownership, the Old West, and hunting and outdoor sports. Spurs are constructed in the classic Canon City Prison style and are large and impressive in size. Spurs are personalized with silver panels along the bands with hand engraved "RED RYDER" in large letters, as well as an "R" on each heel button. Underside of shanks are stamped "DEAF MUTE" by the Canon City Prison inmate that made them. This was a mark that was always known to exist, but now found on this set as the only known example. These have been in the family since acquired by Fred himself.
2-3/4" band, 2-1/2" shank and 2" rowel.
Condition: Very good with light period wear.
