As 1944 progressed and Allied troops pushed in towards Germany, it became clear that desperate measures would need to be taken to arm every available German. Those too old or too young, or otherwise unfit for service in the Wehrmacht were pressed into service in the Volkssturm as a final line of defense. Arms already in short supply, several simplified and easier to produced designs were trialed in late 1944. Among them was the innovative Gustloff MP507 (VG 1-5), a semi-automatic carbine which utilized the MP44's 7.92x33mm cartridge and magazines. Although initially rejected in favor of continued MP44 assault rifle production, approximately 10,000 were made under contract for the Volkssturm. Of this late-war production, very few survive, W. Darrin Weaver listing only 27 known VG 1-5 rifles including this example on page 238 of "Desperate Measures". Of rather simple stamped steel construction with a machined bolt, this rifle is numbered "Th.1185" on both sides of the plain walnut stock, the "Th" likely indicating the Thuringia Gau which sanctioned the rifles production. An "R.A100" is also deeply stamped on the right side, presumably a subcontractor or inspection stamp. The main body of the rifle is otherwise unmarked plain steel, some painted finish remaining in protected areas. Simple protected post and square notch sights. This example has the updated style magazine catch. A "qnw" code MP44 magazine is included with "qlx" marked base plate. The original integral woven sling is also retained. This scarce rifle is photographed and described on page 235 of Weaver's "Desperate Measures". CONDITION: Good. Rifle displays an even bright patina with some painted finish retained in protected areas and a few spots of discoloration. Stocks are likewise good with impressions, nicks, and areas of darkening. Barrel has been tastefully extended several inches to meet US import requirements. Bore is strong with some frosting and abrasions. Fine mechanics. A nice example of a very scarce German last-ditch assault rifle.
