Originally developed as a means to destroy or disable enemy armored fighting vehicles such as tanks and armored cars, the Lahti L-39, among other anti-tank rifles of the period, quickly became obsolete as advancements in tank design and armor angling easily mitigated 20mm anti-tank rounds. Though its initial purpose was short lived, the Lahti L-39 did find success with Finnish troops during the Continuation War, where it proved to be an effective means of damaging enemy fortifications, destroying enemy gun emplacements, and was even utilized to counter snipe enemy snipers in the field. This example is marked "20 pst. kiv. /39" above the VKT logo, a boxed Finnish "SA" property mark, as well as the serial number on the left side of the receiver. Metal components are blued, while the cheek rest, grip, and perforated barrel shroud are comprised of wood. Bipod/skis are painted green. Matching numbers are present on the receiver, lower receiver assembly, as well as on the gas tube. Barrel does not match, but is within the same serial number range. This example is accompanied by an original wood transit chest containing 4 magazine carriers that contain a total of 8 magazines. 10 rounds of original grey tipped German ammunition is included with this lot. CONDITION: Metal components retain the majority of their original arsenal blue finish, exhibiting some areas of scattered surface oxidation, as well as some minor wear. Bore is bright and retains strong rifling throughout. Transit chest shows some wear, but is otherwise sturdy and serviceable. A nice example of a desirable Lahti L-39 anti-tank rifle.
