This is one of very few specimens in the National Firearms Act Registry. Perhaps the only specimen likely to become available for purchase. This model was a competitor, alongside the MG42/59, and MAG 58 in the post-World War II era as a General-Purpose Machine Gun. The Madsen-Saetter machine gun incorporates a combination desirable features of earlier rifle caliber machine guns. It was intended to be a competitor on the world market to be a General-Purpose machine gun utilizing the lessons learned during World War II. It incorporates the locking system of the German G43, and the belt feed capability of the German MG-42. It also utilizes a gas piston system and adjustable gas regulator which adapts it to variance in ammunition as well as providing an adjustable rate of fire. It has a very interesting and innovative quick-change barrel method which will be the subject of a promotional video. The Madsen-Saetter Mark I competed unfavorably with the MAG-58 and MG 42/59 in Britain before it has been fully developed. The Mark III, as offered here incorporates a larger diameter barrel, stronger lock mechanism, and robust folding front sight. The top cover redesigned to be able to close whether the bolt was forward or to the rear. The most important improvements affecting reliability incorporated into the Mark III was the provision for a center mounted belt holding box, non-reciprocating charging handle, and more robust trigger guard. The belt box kept the belted ammunition clean and out of the way, and the charging handle no longer was subject to interference. The trigger guard was the lock-up point for the tripod. Currently it has a .30-06 barrel in it but a second barrel in 7.62x51mm is included with this lot. Original tripod also included with this lot. Electronic NFA registry indicates “COMPAGNIE MADSEN A/S” as the manufacturer. PROVENANCE: From the collection of esteemed NFA firearms enthusiast and collector J. R. Moody. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent original black enamel finish on metal parts except for the barrel which has a dull gray blued finish. Wood is very fine with numerous handling marks on the buttstock. Bores of both barrels are extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is also extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a full-auto only machine gun. A very rare, quite likely the only specimen in the National Firearms Act registry in the United States, and an important design, which unfortunately, was only adopted and manufactured under license in Indonesia, and in sold small quantities, primarily to South American countries. This is a rare opportunity for the historical machine gun collector and savvy, forward thinking investor to acquire a very interesting firearm.
