Gustloff manufactured MG-42 machine gun marked “M.U.” and “dfb” with Nazi proofs on receiver and other various places which indicates 1944 manufacture by Gustloff of Suhl. Other Nazi proof marks in evidence are “cof” (Eickhorn) on top cover and handgrip. Feed tray is marked “sas”. Bolt is of post-war manufacture (better material frankly), with anti-bolt bounce assembly inside. Original Nazi marked bipod and scarce original Nazi marked (hvq 44) wooden buttstock without retrofitted wire reinforcement. Original Nazi 8mm barrel. Anti-aircraft flip-up post present at rear sight. Post-May 1945 leather sling attached to gun. Consignor states this gun runs well, and based upon close observation of this gun this cataloger feels this is very likely. The spring tensions are correct in all respects. Electronic NFA registry indicates “Germany” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent dull grey “dipped” refinish with the exception of the feed tray which is a grey patina, and the barrel. This gun has tight rivets and overall appears to be in fine shooting condition. Dark brown grips near excellent with some light handling marks. Buttstock has a split that runs parallel to the bore line visible on both sides. A good wood restorative specialist should be able to improve this. Buttstock is completely serviceable as is. Sling is very strong, supple, and serviceable. Bore is near excellent shiny and bright. Bolt face is extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. This is a full auto only machine gun. This is a World War II gun that will display well as well as be a specimen one can take to the range and enjoy. Anybody who is interested in WWII German machine guns would be proud to own this gun. A fine specimen of the state-of-the-art general purpose belt-fed German machine gun of WWII, which remained in service after the war for many years as the MG-3. An impressive gun on the firing line with a very distinctive sound! THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO & RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2023-04-10
