This is a M1 Thompson which was subjected to the elements for a significant period time somewhere during its history. The receiver is so deeply pitted under the refinish that incidental to it being re-worked prior to registration, the manufacturer’s markings are gone, except for “UN” on the left side of the receiver. The only number on the receiver is the hand-stamped IRS registration number across the top. The Savage-manufactured lower assembly retains its number, 1189226. One nice thing about this piece is that it retains an M1 bolt employing a separate hammer-fired firing pin. This Thompson will not accept drum magazines, only stick magazines. This specimen has the simplified non-adjustable “L” rear sight with protective “ears” on either side. No magazine present, but these are readily available. Electronic NFA registry indicates “THOMPSON” as the manufacturer, and “M1A1” as the model. Incoming paper form 4 indicates “ZZZ” in the manufacturer’s block. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is moderately pitted on upper receiver under matte refinish. Lower assembly is extremely fine matte refinish. Wood is extremely fine with some light bruises and handling marks. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright in what is clearly a replacement barrel with toolmarks in evidence at the chamber exterior with discoloration to the finish. Bolt face is extremely fine to near excellent. Relatively small numbers of the M1 Thomoson were produced with the hammer-fired firing pin before the fixed firing pin Model M1A1 superseded it, and many were converted to the M1A1 bolt system. It certainly is better for the collecting community that someone reworked what was a pretty poor condition receiver into a gun and registered it to be fully transferable when one still could. A gun to take to the range and shoot as much as one wants without affecting “collector value”. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2024-05-081
