This is a fantastic specimen of one of the best light-to-medium machine guns of WW2. Discerning collectors will agree that the Czechs at their BRNO factory were developing and manufacturing firearms to the highest quality standards of fit and finish prior to the start of World War II. The ZB-26 machine gun was one of these. When Germany took over Czechoslovakia starting in 1939, they took control of the arms factories, and all of the arms in the process of production, completed arms awaiting completion of contract for shipment to buyers, and the arms of the Czech military forces. Germany needed weapons, and absorbed what they needed at will, including ZB-26 machine guns. A significant number of these went to SS units, rail police, and others who were not yet able to procure weapons through German Army channels. Germany designated the BRNO arms manufacturing facility as “WAFFENWERKE BRUNN A.G.", assigned WaA 63 as their inspection proof code, and production of weapons continued under German occupation. Guns that were in various stages of completion were finished, including some which had already been partially marked. This, and the fact that Czech army guns were taken into German service, accounts for the variety of markings, proof marks, and sometimes renumbering of barrels on ZB-26 machine guns. This specimen offered here is marked as manufactured by “WAFFENWERKE BRUNN A.G.” on the left side of the receiver, and "ZB 26 No 1347" on right side of receiver. Eagle over "WAA 63" proof marks are on other parts of this weapon as well as eagle over Swastika firing proof. Visible SNs match to include the Nazi proofed barrel which has a struck-through no. "33641-42". Gas cylinder is also marked "1347". The crest on the top of the receiver, original Czech circle "Z" markings together with the Nazi markings found on this weapon tell a story of this gun’s history. One original 20 round magazine is included with this gun. Electronic NFA registry indicates, “WAFFENWERKE BRUNN” in the manufacturer’s block. CONDITION: Near excellent deep lustrous blue finish on metal surfaces with very light handling marks in places. Gas cylinder is the appropriate grey finish. Trigger and barrel release latch are an attractive plum color. Bolt and piston appropriately in the white and very clean. There are a couple of very light scratches to the finish on the receiver and some loss of finish where the charging handle rides in its slot. Wood carrying handle has a couple of bruises and a 3/8" chip at the 7 o'clock position when viewed from the rear which is not immediately noticeable. Balance of wood stock and hand grip have a few dings and light handling marks with a 1/4" bruise on the pistol grip bottom right side. The finish of the barrel cooling rings is absolutely stunning. Remnants of preservative grease in the action. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt face near excellent. This is a select-fire machine gun. This cataloger has personally known where this gun has been, and the previous two owners spanning many decades into the past. Of all the specimens of this model this cataloger has personally observed over the years, this one stands out as being the finest. Its Nazi proofs only add to its desirability in the American collector’s market. It is hard to imagine a finer specimen will ever surface for private ownership in the United States.
