Extremely fine condition original U.S. Model M5 60mm mortar complete with original bipod and baseplate. The M5 Mortar was an improved version of the World War II M2 60mm Mortar and was used alongside the older World War II mortars in U.S. inventory until both were eventually displaced in favor of the Model 224 starting in the mid 1970's. The M5 mortar is essentially the same as the M2 mortar except the baseplate is more portable and easily deployed in a hasty manner. The U.S. had learned from their encounters with the Japanese that the ability to be versatile and to quickly use the mortar for direct fire on the battlefield provided a tactical advantage. Not often seen on the collector market for sale, this is an Amnesty registered piece with an IRS number and "Unknown" in the manufacturer block is a very desirable item. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original painted finish on tube flaking off in place to reveal either a gray or brown patina. Baseplate is in a comparable condition. Bipod is extremely fine, with very much nicer paint with preservative grease on mechanism parts. Bore is very good, turned a brown patina with age. A nice U.S. 60mm Mortar.
