Nicknamed the “Thumper” by U.S. military personnel, the M-79 was the natural evolution of pocket artillery which grew out of Americans seeing the Japanese use their portable Type 89 Grenade dischargers during WWII. Americans began to use our own 60mm mortars in innovative ways. Mortars evolved to become trigger fired, and once the High-Low propulsion system was refined, to reduce recoil, the M-79 entered service in 1961. It became a very popular and effective weapon. Essentially lobbing 40x46mm grenades out to greater distances and greater accuracy than a human being could hurl a grenade, but even more importantly, could do so repeatedly without having to pull safety pins, or get tired doing so. Fold down sight is present. Safety is a sliding switch at the top tang in the tradition of double-barreled shotguns. Trigger guard folds out of the way if the firer desires. Electronic NFA registry indicates "FORM 2 REGISTRATION” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent matte finish upon manufacture, with near excellent wood and fine condition recoil pad. Bore is extremely fine. There is nothing else quite like sending rounds, even chalk rounds, downrange with the accompanying “bloop” sound. A favorite and iconic presence in numerous films, and a great fun recreational piece. These do not surface for sale very often. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS A "DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE". JWK 2025-05-058.
