Very unusual to find a Maxim MG-08 machine gun which has a matching numbered (6439a) lock which is original and not forced matched in some way. Combine this fact with the general condition of this gun, which has no evidence of ever having been deactivated, or having the feed arm broken off, and the indicators are that this gun was brought back from combat in WWI. It is also noteworthy that the parts of this gun are all of a consistent finish, which is another indicator of the originality of this gun. The lubricant caps on this gun are mismatched, but probably were on the gun as brought-back judging from the condition. There is an added etched in “K” at the front of the top cover, and on the right side receiver plate, probably added for unit identification. Thumbpieces not present on the water fill cap. The “head” on the lower water jacket retention pin is broken off, but this does not affect function. Soft wire replaces retention cotter-pins in places. Drain valve and steam port fitting present with one “prong” of the steam port fitting broken off. No cork nor chain present. Electronic NFA registry indicates “GERMANY” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original blue finish generally thinning to a gray and brown patina throughout. It is very unusual and attractive that the water jacket on this gun has only one small unobtrusive and barely noticeable dent. The matching lock and other externally visible matching parts on this gun are certain to attract attention. Barrel is serial numbered side down, and was not removed due to tight packing. The fusee cover has some scars and scattered pitting, but it is an original Spandau 1917 dated cover for this gun. Backplate spade handles are fine with some handling marks and with a couple small chips. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright with some darkness towards the muzzle. Lock face is extremely fine. Gun mechanics are positive, with action moving smoothly when operated by hand. This is a Full-Auto only machine gun. Actually very rare to find a Maxim as matching as this one. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2025-05-082.
