Manufactured circa 1870 and attractively engraved. Attributed to the Ulrich brothers by R.L. Wilson, the silver plated brass frame is engraved on the right with an open geometric panel flanked by large, punch dot shaded foliate scrolls and line borders. More interestingly, the left side features a Mexican Coat of Arms, a spread wing eagle, with similar foliate scroll and linework. Several other Model 1866s are known in the 30,000 and 40,000 engraved with Mexican eagles for sale there. This particular example is photographed in both Madis's "The Winchester Book" on page 89 and Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" on page 74. Otherwise standard with carbine length round barrel, full length magazine, German silver front sight, rear carbine leaf, and 2-line address. Saddle ring receiver slotted for a dust cover, the cover no longer present. Stocks are plain walnut with a brass crescent trap butt plate, engraved with a foliate scroll at the heel. Butt plate internally numbered with a matching "6130". PROVENANCE: Ex. Stanley R. Andrus. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel displays a pleasing freckled chocolate patina with a clean and legible address. Receiver retains traces of silver, the balance a mellowing golden patina. Stocks have some scattered impressions and abrasions from age, but no major sign of distress. Bore is strong and bright with some cleaned black powder oxidation. Fine mechanics. A great, well published Ulrich engraved '66 carbine.
