Of standard configuration throughout with the exception of the rifled barrels. Both pistols with identical barrel markings, "U.S. G.W.H." over "P", locks marked "H. ASTON MIDDTN CONN 1847". Both stocks with identical inspector's marks, "NAP" for Nathan A. Patch, and "WAT" for William A. Thorton. Pistols with steel-notched rear sights. CONDITION: Barrels polished bright, partially obscuring markings. Locks and hammers polished bright, one pistol with some pitting around hammer on lock. Stocks in excellent condition with clear cartouches with only very minor marks. Both triggers retain some original bright blue on flats. Actions are excellent. Nipples show no firing and bores are brilliant. Pistols are cased in an oak velvet-lined casing in the French matter with no partitions. Lining of case shows considerable age, with velvet broken through where hammers of Astons have lain for a long time. A most unusual and possibly unique pair of rifle-sighted 1842 Astons in an old case, possibly made for presentation to a high-ranking military officer.
